Emperor of Galaxy: the first matches with live players

Our online space strategy game saw its first matches with two and three live players: diplomacy, spying and boarding work, but the galaxy proved too big.

At the end of September we brought two, then three live players into one galaxy for the first time. In the three-player galaxy, three races made a non-aggression pact, declared war and exchanged letters; in other matches a spy came back reporting a failed attempt and a boarding party seized an enemy cruiser mid-battle.

The biggest surprise was distance. Capitals are scattered so widely that a fleet needs about two real hours to reach the nearest neighbour, so war between people simply never happened. Now we are working out how to draw the galaxy tighter. Along the way we checked every technology description against what it really does, and the info screen shows rivals’ numbers openly — just as they see yours.
